School is almost out for summer but that didn't mean that the students showed any signs of slowing down today. We began our morning with crossword puzzle that had us testing our memories about the topics of recycling, reducing and reusing. Students then continued on to finish up the board games they created around the science topic of "Light and Shadow". They did a fantastic job and had the opportunity to try out the games in the afternoon. It was fun to see them putting their skills to the test with questions cards that asked "What does refraction mean?" or "How does light travel?". This morning we began with an "Eye Opener" that asked students to find the hidden message. The first message was Sports Day Fun and This Is Our Last Week of School :) Next, students moved into the gym where the Grade 3 students told us about how successful we were in raising over $3500. All our hard work will have paid off as we will help over 3,000 people who are in need of clean drinking water in Somalia, with the "Every Drop Counts" campaign. It is truly amazing the difference New Brighton students are making in the world. After our assembly we moved outside and got a chance to try lots of different activities. Students tried Rainbow Dash, Relay Races, Dodgeball, 3-Legged Race, Potato Sack Races, etc. It was lots of fun and ended in Freezie - YUM! At lunch we celebrated all the money we raised with our pizza party.
This afternoon we made some art that was inspired by a Kaleidoscope. We learned that these optical devices use refraction and reflection. Lastly, we are finishing up our board games. They will be ready to rock tomorrow! Reminders: June 28 - Last Day of School (early dismissal) Today we began our morning with Mr. Hutton reading the Acknowledgment of the Land to the school. We also learned about why we celebrate and why it's important. Our hidden words were "National Aboriginal Day" and you can learn more about it by visiting the Government of Canada website here.
We also got a chance to go visit our grade 1 friends that did investigative research around the New Brighton Pond. Looking through the lense of an "environmentalist" these young students told us: 1) it is important to walk quietly to not scare wildlife, 2) to ensure pets like dogs are leashed, 3) to take care of the natural environment by not littering. Good work grade 1! In math, students finished an activity that had them adding decimals. They found the individual bill for each of their friend's orders and the total bill for the three or four friends that visited their restaurant. These were sent home for parents to look at. As well, we finished our superhero writing and Mrs. Otterson is in the process of putting it into a book to be shared with the class. Students worked hard through the process of developing their characters, describing their setting, coming up with a reasonable problem and then solving that problem. After lunch we continued to work on research around the concepts of light and shadow as we build a board game to play next week. The gym was great fun! Students played "Crab Soccer" where they had to sit on a scooter and not using any hands to move along, play a game of soccer five on five. Even Mrs. Otterson and Miss Nanavaty got in on the action. Reminders: June 26 - Sports Day June 28 - Last Day of School (early dismissal) Today was a fun day. This morning we began by looking at how to convert fractions into decimals (if we related our thinking to money), comparing fractions and adding decimals. The three questions we explored:
We also began typing our superhero stories in Google Docs. If you log in from home, you can see the progress of your child's writing. Feel free to provide them with feedback and help them edit their work for spelling, punctuation, organization, etc. After lunch some of the students began using the computers to explore some of the concepts around "light and shadow". One of the websites they visited was found here - look under the grade 4 science tab for light and shadow. As well, students began creating their own board games that were connected to our study in science, using measurement to build squares on our board game. Check out the criteria below: Reminders:
June 26 - Sports Day June 28 - Last Day of School (early dismissal) What an awesome day! Our classroom placed first in the "Every Drop Counts Campaign" that was run by the grade 3's. We raised a whopping $450 to donate to Wheels for Wells to build wells that will help supply clean drinking water to those most in need. Here are some facts about the water projects that Wheels for Wells (http://www.wheelsforwells.ca/) have begun: The water projects help provide children and families in poverty with access to clean water through endeavors such as:
We wrapped up our superhero writing today and tomorrow we begin typing our stories that will go along with our artwork to make a book. Check out some of our superheroes below. Students also got an opportunity to play four-way capture the flag with Ms. Maher and Mrs. Deibert's class today. It was lots of fun and lots of running! Ask your child how to play. We then enjoyed some time outside playing outdoor games like four square on the compound. For math we continued to focus on adding numbers with decimals. Using all the money we collected for the Wheels for Wells cause, students looked at how to add bills first, moving into small change.
Yearbooks have Arrived Our yearbooks celebrating our first year together have arrived. Students who ordered yearbooks will be bringing them home today – so check those backpacks. We have a limited supply of yearbooks available for purchase in the office for $25 if you didn’t order one and have changed your mind. We're leaving it up to parents if they want their child to have an opportunity to gather signatures or messages from their classmates on the two blank inside covers. If you want your child to gather signatures and autographs please return the yearbook to school on Friday, June 23 and teachers will find some time to make it happen. Students without yearbooks may bring a notebook or will use a page in their Visual Journals for the same purpose. Reminders: June 26 - Sports Day June 28 - Last Day of School (early dismissal) We continue to focus on measurement during our morning "Eye Opener". On Monday we will share our findings to see how students arrived at their final perimeter and area for each item that they measured. The majority of our morning was also spent with our Grade 2 buddy classroom! We took photos with our buddies yesterday and then wrote a letter to them in their visual journal today, telling them how awesome they are and what our favourite buddy activity. We created lovely art pieces to go with our letters as well. We used crayon and did a watercolour wash over top. A very BIG thank you again to all the families that have donated money to help with the "Wells for Wheels" fundraiser. Monday will be the last day to donate to the Grade 3's amazing cause :) As a school we have already surpassed our goal. Well done New Brighton!
Reminders: June 26 - Sports Day June 28 - Last Day of School (early dismissal) We began our morning with a fun math activity that required students to measure different objects in the room, using different units of measurement. We discussed what would be logical. Would it make sense to measure the classroom with a ruler or a meter stick? Next we continued on with our superhero stories! Students have made excellent progress and have been working hard to give each other meaningful and useful feedback. We also looked at a sample of student work about a Haunted House to see what grips the reader. What did the student do well? What left us asking questions? We continued to look at equivalent decimals and how decimals relate to fractions, as well as how to follow the process for adding decimals. Below you will find a sample of the questions that we looked at today. We continue to do an amazing job as a school in our efforts to raise money for a well in Africa. If you are able to contribute to this great cause tomorrow is your last day to make a donation before the Grade 3's count all the money and pass it along to the organization "Wheels for Wells".
Reminders: June 15 - Family Dance Tonight June 26 - Sports Day June 28 - Last Day of School (early dismissal) This morning for 'Eye Opener' we learned about how to relate fractions to decimals and how to decimals to fractions. Please practice this at home with your child. One example would be 0.35 is the same as thirty five-hundredths. We learned about two more 3-Dimensional shapes. Students drew triangular prisms and tetrahedrons :) Three dimensional shapes have vertices (points), faces and edges. Look for some real life examples in your home. In writing we continued to look at our superhero stories, connected to our legacy projects. Mrs. Otterson read several different story beginnings that showed us how to use 1) dialogue, 2) action, 3) sound effect and 4) narration (thoughts and questions). Students shared some of the great beginnings and tomorrow we will move along to look at how to build up to our problem. Students practiced looking at fractions and decimals in the hundredths. Ask your child to describe place value now that they know tenths and hundredths. Here are some some examples of the questions we looked at. In the gym, we played "Temple Run". Students have to dodge and run to collect treasures without being hit by a ball.
Lastly, in science we focused on how light travels through different types of objects. Some new vocabulary we now know: translucent, transparent, and opaque. As a school we have already raised over $300 toward building a well in Africa. Keep the generosity coming! *Tomorrow is Walking Wednesday and Waste-Free Lunch* Reminders: June 14 - School Council Meeting June 15 - Fun Lunch & Family Dance June 28 - Last Day of School This morning students looked at ordering fractions and how fractions are related to money. They had to complete the following questions:
We have also been sketching different 3-Dimensional shapes. Looking at the number of points (verticies), edges and faces each shape has. Students even began making connections to some of the shapes around our classroom, pointing out a pencil sharpener and a glue stick are cylinders. In writing, we began looking at fictional story writing, creating a superhero story based on the topic we used for our Legacy Projects. Students looked at the different elements of story writing, creating heroes, villains, etc. They worked with their classmates and the teacher to help brainstorm interesting settings, problems, powers/abilities, while beginning a rough draft sketch of their hero or villain would look like. As part of science we began exploring sources of light. There was discussion how sunlight, electricity and fire all produce heat. Luminescent light has no heat source and we looked at several amazing sea creatures that make their own light!! We also had some grade three friends come for a visit to tell us about the project they have been working on around clean drinking water. In an effort to build a well in Africa they are asking students to bring donations. More information can be found below: Every Drop Counts for Sports Day The Grade 3’s have been learning about water issues around the world and when they heard about kids in Africa having to walk for 6 hours a day to collect water for their families, they decided they needed to take action. They have been busy planning a fun filled day for all of the students at New Brighton School. Here are all of the important details: Every Drop Counts for Sports Day will be on June 26th They are asking us to bring in a donation, which will go to Wheels For Wells to help build a well in Africa. This organization was started by a 9-year-old boy from here in Calgary. Check out their website at http://www.wheelsforwells.ca/ There are some really great prizes! *There will be a pizza party for the class that raises the most money in each grade. *Any student who brings in a donation will also be entered into a draw for other cool prizes. Our Goal is to raise over $1000, so please bring what you can and together we can make a real difference! Reminders:
June 13 - Popcorn Snack June 14 - School Council Meeting June 15 - Fun Lunch & Family Dance June 28 - Last Day of School Our 'Eye Opener' was a word search using homonyms. Ask me to give you an example.
In IRIS we looked at our learning goals from the past several months. We described if we had met our goal and how we achieved it. If we have not met our goal, we set a new one and will work towards that over the next few weeks and will work on it in grade 5. Students added an artifact that showed an example of exemplary work. Ask your child to share their artifact and explain what made it excellent. During guided reading we continue to read our novels, focus on vocabulary games, look at math work related to fractions and complete reading assessments. Have a lovely weekend!
