Today we began our morning by looking at the Eye Opener 1. Complete the following patterns:
We also revisited "Expository Writing" as we revised our spirit animal writing. Students received feedback about how to improve, make their work more specific, or elaborate on the details for the three traits or qualities of their spirit animal. We reviewed the criteria for what makes a good piece of expository writing. It includes, an introductory paragraph, supporting paragraphs that have topic sentences and details, and lastly, a concluding paragraph. Students worked to finish their simple machines books this morning. They were required to create a book that provided a definition for each of the six types of simple machines and draw and label three examples of each. If it was not completed this morning it was sent home as homework. We will be having a science quiz on Wednesday to review this material. After lunch students began new Literacy Stations during Guided Reading. There are three new stations that include: 1) a simple machines scavenger hunt, 2) rewriting a simple machines paragraph that focuses on using punctuation and capitals, and 3) writing a letter to the teacher. At the end of the day we began creating a piece of artwork based on our spirit animal writing. Students began by focusing on how to compose their image on the page and looking at a picture (breaking it down into simple shapes) as a reference. Tomorrow we will create patterns in the negative space around our spirit animal. Reminders:

Today students did some excellent work! We worked on paragraph writing around the research we conducted about our spirit animals. Students had picked the top three characteristics of their animal and then had to write about how they connected to that animal, giving specific examples that demonstrate those traits. We will wrap up this writing next week and focus on making revisions and edits.
In math we finished looking at the following multiplication word problems today:
Several important things went home today. Please review what is in their home communication folder. A consent form for the Human Sexuality unit needs to be returned before March 13th. Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the nice weather! This morning we had the opportunity to go and visit some of the arcade games that the Grade 5 students created using recycled materials. They had taken inspiration from a nine year old boy that had created arcade games using cardboard boxes. You can check out his website here and watch the video below. Writing and social studies were connected today with students learning about Spirit Animals. As we have been studying First Nations culture we have focused on their deep connection to the land and the animals that allowed them to survive many years ago. Students were asked to research an animal that they felt was representative of themselves. They had to write about the characteristics or traits of that animal and tomorrow will describe why they feel they are connected to it. Ask your child about what animal they felt they were. You can find more information about them here. We also spent some time today discussing the importance of completing tasks. Students were given time to go back into some of the work they have done and look at it critically. What did they do well, what could they improve, etc. and then make those changes. In science we watched the video below that described all the simple machines in action. They were easily identifying all the simple machines we have studied. Reminders:

Welcome to a new month! There is a lot to do before spring break. Conferences are coming up on the 22nd and 23rd. Please check the blog later to know when you can book a time. We began a new March calendar as an Eye Opener. Mrs. Otterson challenged us to figure out where to begin the first day of the month without providing a calendar. "I figured it out using my birthday. My birthday is on Friday so I counted backward," said Avery. "I looked at the date on the white board," said Haven. "I looked at the day of the week and there are only 28 days in February (yesterday was Tuesday), so I knew today was Wednesday," explained Ella. In Social Studies, a book called "Eagle Boy" by Richard Lee Vaughn was read aloud. This story is about a young boy, born an orphan, that grows up to love eagles, despite the fact that the people of his tribe distrust eagles. In return he is ridiculed and made an outcast. One year, the tribe has difficulty hunting and fishing, and must depart their land. With not enough room in their boats, Eagle Boy is left behind. He is saved from starvation by the eagles he loves, and using their assistance saves his starving tribe, who have not been able to find a fertile place to live since their departure. Students had to visualize what the scene would look like and draw as they listened. They also had to listen for important or key words that stood out. We also studied different types of levers and focused on where the load, fulcrum and effort is for a first, second and third class lever.
In math we looked at several word problems that focused on multiplying by 6, 7 and 8. Please practice these multiplication facts at home with your child. Some good websites to practice with include: We also continue to work on our Science Center writing during guided reading. Using a picture prompt students are explaining what they did, what they learned, what they have questions about. Check out some of our work below.
