Welcome to a new month! There is a lot to do before spring break. Conferences are coming up on the 22nd and 23rd. Please check the blog later to know when you can book a time. We began a new March calendar as an Eye Opener. Mrs. Otterson challenged us to figure out where to begin the first day of the month without providing a calendar. "I figured it out using my birthday. My birthday is on Friday so I counted backward," said Avery. "I looked at the date on the white board," said Haven. "I looked at the day of the week and there are only 28 days in February (yesterday was Tuesday), so I knew today was Wednesday," explained Ella. In Social Studies, a book called "Eagle Boy" by Richard Lee Vaughn was read aloud. This story is about a young boy, born an orphan, that grows up to love eagles, despite the fact that the people of his tribe distrust eagles. In return he is ridiculed and made an outcast. One year, the tribe has difficulty hunting and fishing, and must depart their land. With not enough room in their boats, Eagle Boy is left behind. He is saved from starvation by the eagles he loves, and using their assistance saves his starving tribe, who have not been able to find a fertile place to live since their departure. Students had to visualize what the scene would look like and draw as they listened. They also had to listen for important or key words that stood out. We also studied different types of levers and focused on where the load, fulcrum and effort is for a first, second and third class lever.
In math we looked at several word problems that focused on multiplying by 6, 7 and 8. Please practice these multiplication facts at home with your child. Some good websites to practice with include: We also continue to work on our Science Center writing during guided reading. Using a picture prompt students are explaining what they did, what they learned, what they have questions about. Check out some of our work below.
